Are you or have you ever been a sex addict?  Has anyone ever called you one?  What is sex addiction?  Is it a real psychological illness or a myth concocted by professional addictionologists, inflated by the sensation-hungry media and perpetrated by desperate-for-redemption celebrity “sex addicts” like David Duchovny and Tiger Woods?  What about John Travolta?  What about us?  What does it mean when we talk about problematic human sexuality as an “addiction,” i.e., an uncontrollable sickness?  Perhaps equating sexual behavior with narcotic abuse by using the clinical label of “addiction” is actually more indicative of a mental illness in society than it is the individual.

Maybe “sex addiction” is just the current craze of therapists and mainstream media attaching fear to recreational sex, much as it was with prior commonly held beliefs such as masturbation leading to blindness, or that women with high sex drives were victims of “nymphomania.” Despite the lack of scientific substance, people love to call themselves and others “sex addicts.”  It’s like we’re addicted to seeing ourselves as addicts.  And even though being called a “sex addict” tends to be pretty humiliating, it can also be kind of sexy, especially for the great number of people who find the idea of being helplessly “out of control” intensely erotic, not to mention a good excuse for bad behavior.

So maybe the best option is just to wear the label like more of a badge of honor than a scarlet letter, much as people are already doing with labels like “slut” and “queer.”  As more and more normal people say, “Yes, I’m a sex addict, and I’m not ashamed,” maybe so-called experts would stop using it to vilify people whose sexual tastes are simply different from the norm or, on the other hand, to exonerate selfish sexual conduct.  We’re All Sex Addicts Now.

Education is power, and sex education is sexual power.  Why do we need a good sex education?  Because repression relies on ignorance.  We need education in the sexual sciences to counter damaging, sometimes deadly superstitions and misinformation. We need education in the sexual arts to help improve our erotic lives and keep our families intact. We need education in sexual psychology and philosophy to help us determine our true sexual nature and cultivate it in a fulfilling, ethical manner.

We always aim to educate as we stimulate and agitate on the show, and this broadcast focuses on the sexual sciences, featuring leading members of The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, SSSS or “Quad S” as they call it.  It takes place during the weekend of the SSSS 2012 Western Regional Conference where I gave a talk on “The Bonobo Way: An Alternative Great Ape Paradigm for Human Sexuality” (video soon to be posted online).  On Saturday night, SSSS came to the Speakeasy for an elegant soirée  with BDSM demonstrations by Olga and her friends.  Then we all gathered in the Womb Room to start our live show featuring the important sexual science work of SSSS itself, as well as that of some of its most interesting individual members and leaders.

We love sex scientists and sex educators, but we can’t forget to take our hats (and pants!) off to the porn stars that help educate us as well, acting as the “front line shock troops” of the sexual revolution. Of course, the great majority of porn is not designed to educate, but to entertain.  Yet because there is such a dearth of explicit sex educational material available, many people turn to porn for sex education.

Here in our human BonoboVille, we love to bring together our favorite porn stars with professors from different disciplines related to sex to see how they can enlighten, entertain and educate each other, as well as us: body, mind and soul.  This show is a very stimulating and Sybian-ating—example of that remarkable synergy found “only at the Speakeasy.”

This year, Passover not only coincides with Easter Eve, but overlaps another ritual—Saturday night’s live broadcast of The Dr. Susan Block Show….So, blending ancient traditions from different religions with a generous helping of Speakeasy-style Commedia Erotica and ethical hedonism, I host my own exotic, erotic, comic, agnostic interpretation of a Passover Easter Eve Last Supper Seder Bacchanal with porn stars, friends and lovers—and guess who is coming to dinner? Back from the undead, He rises….Zombie Jesus! Or is that Elijah?  Max?  Whoever’s Res-Erection this is, He’s not the only Jesus at the Seder; from Last Supper Jesus to Bunny Jesus to naked-and-bound-to-the-cross Jesus to Divine Interventions adorable Baby Butt Plug Jesus (who just sits quietly on the table throughout the Seder, but gets quite a bit of X action in the after-party), Christ is all around us.

All of this doesn’t sound very hamish, but my fellow lonsmen who were raised on their Daddy’s knee as he droned through a traditional Passover Seder might appreciate the way we do most of the Haggadah’s important prayers and songs in the original Hebrew, with all the proper trimmings of matzo, Manischewitz for the alcoholically adventuous, and three Seder plates filled with marror (bitter herbs), haroset, green vegetable, shank bone and roasted eggs.  Although our eggs are colored for Easter.  I wonder if anyone else puts an Easter egg on their Seder Plate.
